In this episode of the Ordinary Vegan Podcast, I talk with a man who needs no introduction. His name is Dr. T. Colin Campbell and he is one of the most famous people in the plant-based movement.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, PhD has dedicated his life to the science of human health for more than 60 years. His primary focus is on the association between diet and disease, particularly cancer. Although largely known for the China Study--one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted, and recognized by The New York Timesas the “Grand Prix of epidemiology”--Dr. Campbell’s profound impact also includes extensive involvement in education, public policy, and laboratory research. He also wrote the bestselling book Whole, and The Low-Carb Fraud.

Several documentary films feature Dr. Campbell and his research, including Forks Over Knives, Eating You Alive, Food Matters, and PlantPure Nation. Furthermore, he has delivered hundreds of lectures around the world and  is the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate in partnership with eCornell.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell has dedicated his career to proving that a chronic diagnosis doesn’t have to be a death sentence and that prevention, even reversal, is possible.

Today, Dr. Campbell shares the evidence he’s accumulated over a lifetime of research to show that making the switch to a whole foods plant-based diet is the most effective way to protect yourself from COVID-19 and prevent chronic conditions along with:

  • Why some people are skeptical about science
  • How much plant protein do we need
  • Dr. T. Colin Campbell's extensive research on viruses including hepatitis B and liver cancer
  • How nutrients control cancer
  • Turning cancer on with animal protein
  • COVID-19 and nutrition in a pandemic
  • The China Study
  • Forks over Knives Documentary

Is it time to turn your passion for a vegan lifestyle into a plant-based business?

What was recently a radical lifestyle choice, eating plants, is now rapidly moving into the mainstream. And if there was ever a time to open a plant-based business, now is the time.

According to Meticulous Research, the plant-based food market worth will be 74.2 billion by 2027. Clearly, the growth in this market is due to the nutritional benefits offered by plants and for the sake of the environment.  These statistics open a significant opportunity for vegan entrepreneurs.

Our podcast guest, Björn Öste, is a seasoned plant-based business owner and entrepreneur. He is co-founder and CEO of Good Idea Drinks. Good Idea is a flavored sparkling water with a blend of five amino acids and chromium that cuts the blood sugar spike after a meal. It's all-natural, un-sweetened, and contains zero calories.

Prior to Good Idea, Björn co-founded Oatly.  Oatly is one of the most popular non-dairy milks in the world and is sold in over 25 countries.

He and his brother Rickard specialize in plant-based food products with preventative properties.

In Podcast #91, we speak with plant-based business owner Björn Öste about his entrepreneur journey along with :

  • Why consumer research is a waste of time
  • Food as medicine
  • Working with products that make a real and meaningful difference in people's lives
  • The science and innovations in food
  • Raising capital

Starting a vegan business is not for the faint of heart. Building a new business can be scary and risky, but every successful entrepreneur will tell you that it’s worth it.

Today’s podcast is part 1 of a vegan business series focused on plant-based entrepreneurs.  You might be saying why now? Because the coronavirus is sparking a plant-based sales explosion, and this could be a good time to turn your passion into a vegan business.

Additionally, many big successful businesses started in a downturn like Netflix.  Legend has it that Netflix founder, Reed Hastings, was motivated to start an online DVD rental by mail after incurring a $40.00 late fee from Blockbuster.

So, in my opinion, anything is possible.

In Podcast #90, we speak with a first-time vegan business owner Emily Edwards about her entrepreneur journey along with:

  • How to start a vegan business focused on food
  • Testing the viability of a new product
  • Business plan
  • Costs to create a new business
  • Sourcing ingredients
  • Pricing
  • Social responsibility

You can visit Emily’s Kitchen and all her healthy Paradise Snax here.

Several studies that have tested the effects of consuming soup on a regular basis found that routinely eating soup can reduce energy intake, enhance satiety, and promote weight loss. Vegan soups are especially satiating because high fiber vegetables are high volume foods. This is called energy density. Energy density is the number of calories in a particular weight of food. It means you can have satisfying portions of low-energy-dense foods with a relatively low-calorie content.

Such high fiber foods like broccoli, squash, peas, cabbage, spinach and sweet potatoes are high volume foods. They add bulk to your meals and fill up your stomach without a lot of calories. They also keep you full longer.

And vegan soups don't have to be boring. There are a lot of ways to liven them up, so today's podcast is dedicated to vegan soup enhancing tips along with:

In the 2016 US Presidential election, over 10 million people who listed the environment their top priority didn't vote. You might be asking, how can you be an environmentalist and not vote?

Today, Nathaniel Stinnett provides the answers.

Nathaniel Stinnett is the Founder & Executive Director of the Environmental Voter Project, a non-partisan nonprofit that uses big data and behavioral science to identify non-voting environmentalists and then get them to vote.

He has held a variety of senior leadership and campaign manager positions on U.S. Senate, Congressional, state, and mayoral campaigns, and he sits on the Board of Advisors for MIT’s Environmental Solutions Initiative.

Today I sit down with Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams.

Eric is in the running to be the next mayor of New York City and he is using his platform to spark real change and spread the plant-based message.

Here is some background. At 15 years old, Eric Adams was beaten by police. The traumatizing incident inspired him to become a police officer to help reform New York City policing from the inside. He co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, and after 22 years on the force, retired as a captain.

Eric served in the New York Senate for seven years and was elected Brooklyn Borough President in 2013. He is now serving his second term.

In 2016 when Eric was out of the country, he experienced stomach pains and feared it was colon cancer.

When he returned to America, he went to the doctor and found out that his colon was fine, but that he had an ulcer and was in the late stages of type-2 diabetes. This caused him to lose sight in his left eye and was slowly losing it in his right eye, making him legally blind. He even experienced nerve damage in his hands and feet from diabetes.

Eric went and spoke to multiple doctors like Dr. Esselstyn, who told him to stop eating processed foods, dairy, and meat. After three weeks of following their recommendations, Eric’s vision cleared up from diabetes. After three months, his diabetes went into remission, and his ulcer went away. He dropped 35 pounds and realized the power of food and how fast your body responds to you giving it the proper nutrients it needs to function.

But this conversation isn't just about Eric's transformation, it is also about how he is using his position to encourage New York to explore plant-based eating and creating new food policies.

Be prepared to be inspired by Eric Adams.

You can pre-order Eric Adams new book "Healthy At Last: A Plant-based Approach to Preventing Diabetes and Other Chronic Illnesses" on Amazon.

News flash: 2020 has been a rough year on everybody. And according to a recent happiness study, people in the US are more unhappy today than they've been in nearly 50 years. The study found that just 14% of American adults say they're very happy. This statistic is down from 31% who said the same in 2018.

Furthermore, in other parts of the world, the health and economic impact of Covid-19 has been significant. So stress and unhappiness isn't just an American problem.

Obviously, it's easy to cultivate happiness when life is going our way. But what about the darker times? How can some people remain happy in troubling times?

As it turns out, scientific data suggests there are particular reasons why some people weather the storm better than others.

Today's podcast is devoted to evidence-based studies on how to be happy along with:

  • Happiness Study 2019
  • World Happiness Report
  • Harvard College Study on why some people live longer and happier
  • The secrets of people who remain happy in stressful times
  • The importance of community service
  • Community service ideas
  • How contact with nature strengthens our social bonds
  • A new study on dairy and breast cancer
  • Toxic chemicals in dental floss

T cells are the most important cells in adaptive immune response because these immune hunters can seek and destroy an infected cell. Unquestionably, building an army of these cells is the single most important defense we have against Covid 19.

And although a robust immune system will not totally prevent us from getting the virus, it will offer additional protection. Furthermore, a strong immunity can lessen symptoms if you contract the disease.

As we all know, this pandemic has been distressing, frightening, and disruptive. There is currently no vaccine to prevent the coronavirus, so the best way to prevent illness is to wear a mask, social distance, and maintain a healthy body. My number one goal is to keep you safe and well, and I hope today's conversation adds to your health and longevity.

This podcast is dedicated to building, boosting and increasing T cells along with:

  • Why T cells are the most critical defense against Covid-19
  • How to improve, boost and increase immunity cells
  • How immune cells can protect against cancer
  • Zinc's special relationship with immunity
  • The best plant-based sources of zinc
  • Zinc boosting recipes
  • Superfoods to build T cells

There are plenty of good reasons to include lots of physical activity into your life. Big ones include reducing your risk for heart disease, obesity, type-2 diabetes, or stroke.

Exercise can also cause changes in antibodies and white blood cells. White blood cells are the body's immune system cells that can help reduce your chance of becoming sick.

In addition, physical activity can help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, which adds another layer of protection against Covid-19.

Today's podcast is dedicated to how and why physical activity can enhance your immune health along with:

  • Why excessive sitting or reclining can affect blood sugar
  • Recommendations for physical activity amount for adults
  • How physical inactivity can impact your brain

Did you know the Food and Drug Administration does not require dietary supplements to be proven safe before they are marketed?

Furthermore, supplement use has reached an all-time high. So clearly, it is important to know how to purchase and wisely use dietary supplements safely.

Supplements are available without a prescription and usually come in pill, powder, or liquid form. Popular supplements include vitamins, minerals, and herbal products. People take these products to make sure they get enough essential nutrients to improve their health.

In 2019, the CRN Consumer Survey on Dietary Supplements revealed the highest overall dietary supplement usage to date. Among all the age groups, adults between the ages 35 - 54 have the highest usage.

Unfortunately, supplements can also cause problems, especially if you don't need them.

Today's podcast is dedicated to clearing up the confusion about dietary supplements along with:

Experts have long been concerned about loneliness, and now social isolation has made the epidemic worse.

According to a 2018 national survey by Cigna, loneliness levels have reached an all-time high, with nearly half of 20,000 US adults reporting they sometimes or always feel alone. Sadly, one of our youngest generations, Generation Z, is feeling the most significant impacts of loneliness.

In an analysis conducted by The Pew Research Center, one-in-ten Americans say they feel lonely or isolated from those around them. Unsurprisingly, frequent loneliness is linked to dissatisfaction with one's family and social life.

And lonely people often crave human contact, but their state of mind makes it more difficult to form connections with people.

So America had a chronic loneliness problem before COVID-19. Consequently, now with social isolation, we all find ourselves experiencing the risk of feeling lonely.

Indeed loneliness is a normal human experience, but feeling lonely and isolated for too long can harm our physical and mental health.

A Newcastle University study linked loneliness to a 30% increase for the risk of heart disease.

Another study done by the Florida State University College of Medicine says loneliness is associated with a 40% increase in the risk of dementia. Other studies have indicated that loneliness is a precursor of cognitive decline in general.

As a social species, humans need a safe, secure social circle to survive and thrive.

Overcoming Loneliness In Social Isolation

So today's podcast is dedicated to overcoming loneliness while you are practicing social isolation along with:

  • Identifying the effects of social isolation and loneliness on physical, mental, and cognitive health
  • How social isolation can disrupt Circadian rhythms and cause insomnia
  • Evidence-based interventions for combating loneliness and social isolation

I hope today’s podcast can help you.

“My mission is to empower people to take control of their own health, well-being and fitness using simple breathing exercises proven to improve body oxygenation”.
Patrick McKeown

Most people take their breathing for granted. Why shouldn't they? They have been doing it since birth without any effort.  But my guest, Patrick McKeown, takes breathing very seriously, and he is convinced that breathing correctly can change your life.

Patrick McKeown has written seven books on improving your body's oxygen use. His latest book, "The Oxygen Advantage," is a simple yet revolutionary approach to improving your body's oxygen use.

Furthermore, his book explains why chronic over-breathing can contribute to problems such as anxiety, asthma, fatigue, insomnia, obesity, and heart problems.

Today Patrick shares why one of the biggest obstacles to better health and fitness is how we breathe. Also,  he shares breathing exercises to help increase endurance, weight loss, and improve cardio-fitness.

I am very happy that Patrick was willing to share his expertise in lung health, breathing, and oxygen use.

Because,  as we all know, Covid-19 is a respiratory disease. The virus affects cells in the airways, from the nose and throat down to the lungs. Therefore,  learning techniques to help us breathe better during this outbreak is more crucial than ever.

Please welcome Patrick McKeown to today's podcast.

People often significantly underestimate the quantity and value of the foods that they have stored in cupboards and pantries.  Today’s podcast will teach you how to make the most out of your pantry food.

The uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus is the most challenging thing to handle. Unquestionably, food, and having enough of it is of the utmost importance. And seeing bare shelves at grocery stores is fueling that fear.

People are trying to minimize the risks associated with frequent shopping so they are buying in more significant quantities.

But experts do agree that there is enough food in the supply chain, grocery stores just weren’t prepared for this.

So my recommendation is to begin by doing a pantry, cupboard inventory. A thorough list will help make good use of what you have and perhaps calm your nerves about not having enough food.

Also, pantry food is often thought to be less nutritious than fresh foods, but research shows that is not always true. Actually, some canning can preserve most of the food’s nutrients.

Especially when it comes to canned beans and canned tomatoes. Today, we will learn lots of new ways and recipes to make the most out of our pantry food.

Did you know what you eat can benefit your lung function and improve your respiratory system health?

Today we explore food and exercises to improve conditions in the air passageways to make your lungs stronger. We often don't consider the important role our lungs play in keeping us well. It is not until we experience problems breathing that we take notice.

Recently there has been a lot of attention about lung function and the respiratory system. The new Covid-19 virus attacks the lungs and researchers are trying to understand why.  But until they figure it out, we need to protect ourselves as best we can.

Most people don't know this, but lung function starts to decline at age 30. After the age of 35, breathing becomes gradually more difficult.

The respiratory system does two critical things. It brings oxygen into our bodies, which we need for our cells to function properly. It also helps us get rid of carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide must be removed from the bloodstream before it reaches harmful levels.

When the air sacs become inflamed, we are unable to get enough oxygen to the bloodstream and it reduces the body's ability to get rid of carbon dioxide. This can cause severe pneumonia.

Lung and respiratory disease are some of the most common medical conditions in the world.

The goal of today’s podcast is to get your respiratory system and lungs in tip-top shape to reduce your risk of severe infection.

Ways To Improve Your Respiratory System Health

Even in the best of times, many people struggle to get high-quality sleep.  So today's podcast is devoted to foods to help you sleep.

Since my last podcast, our life, as we know it, has changed drastically. Stress and anxiety are at an all-time high. The coronavirus has changed how we conduct our daily lives, and change is hard.

The first thing I would like to say is stimulate don't isolate. Meaning, take this downtime as an opportunity to do something different. So many of us rush through our moments in life because we are so busy. And now we have literally been forced to stop what we are currently doing.

If you are sick, I am sending you compassion. Here's to you getting steadier, stronger, and healthier every day. I know you can do it.

With big change, comes stress. When we are stressed, it is hard to sleep soundly. And sleep deprivation, weakens your immunity. Virus outbreaks are not the time for a weak immune system.

The good news is, there are foods to help you sleep.

Foods To Help Your Sleep and Strengthen Your Immune System

Not only that, these foods can help you build a stronger immunity to disease. Because, according to Mayo Clinic, the strength of your immune system is dependent on a good night sleep. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick.

Thanks for joining us today, and thanks to my sponsor, Osea Malibu. Go to www.OseaMalibu.com/ordinaryvegan for $10.00 off any purchase of $50.00 or more.

Given the heightened risk of contracting the novel coronavirus, today’s podcast is dedicated to the single best thing you can do to avoid it.

Unquestionably, I am not an alarmist, but sometimes we need to prepare for a possible disruption in our lives like the novel coronavirus.

Also, as of today, March 5, the chances of contracting the novel coronavirus is very low, so please don’t panic. But that doesn’t mean we can’t take precautions.

First off, we are being inundated with new, unfamiliar words and phrases.

For example, SARS-CoV-2 is the official name of the novel coronavirus that is spreading. COVID-19 is the disease it causes.

Most media outlets use the term coronavirus to describe SARS-CoV2.

Coronaviruses CoV is a family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe disease.

There are hundreds of coronaviruses, most of which circulate among animals including pigs, camels, bats and cats

As a result, the term novel coronavirus (nCoV), means this virus is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

It should be noted, that odds are you won’t contract novel coronavirus. Especially if you know how to protect your body from the infection.

Learn today your best defense against the novel coronavirus and the best protection against any flu.

Today’s podcast includes a recipe from “The Easy 5 Ingredient Vegan Cookbook” available now on Amazon.

My sponsor for today’s podcast is Ordinary Vegan’s pure organic vegan CBD Oil made from Hemp.

Today’s podcast explores all the new and extraordinary breakthrough studies that could change the way you look at dark leafy green vegetables.

Furthermore, we discuss tasty ways to eat and include more greens in your diet.

Over the years, my philosophy on cooking plant-based grows, and how I execute recipes keeps evolving. When I was presented with the challenge of developing 100 plant-based recipes with only five ingredients, at first, I was hesitant.

But then I realized that one of the most common barriers to eating plant-based foods was the learning curve and the time it took to cook. And I wanted to share my knowledge and everything I have learned to help make things easy and delicious for you.

Are you looking to increase serotonin and dopamine naturally?

Maybe to fight the winter blues or perhaps to help with more serious mental health issues.

Let”s face it. People are feeling more and more anxious these days. Between the threat of global warming, the coronavirus, and every day news events being stressed and sad it at an all time high.

Feeling sad is part of being human and temporary. Depression is more than ordinary sadness. It can cause anxiety, fatigue, trouble with concentration, and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

Researchers have been studying the link between serotonin and depression for more than five decades. Their conclusion is that having too little of this neurotransmitter can cause or contribute to depression or mental health problems.

In addition, multiple studies now show a major correlation between decreased serotonin and the  food we eat.

Today we learn how the two neurotransmitters,  serotonin, and dopamine, stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness.

We also learn how these neurotransmitters work in our body and how we can increase serotonin and dopamine by the food we consume.

Not only that, there is an exact serotonin formula that you can use whenever you are feeling sad or depressed.

HOW TO INCREASE SEROTONIN & DOPAMINE NATURALLY WITH FOOD

I am constantly tapping into the vast pool of studies that connect food and disease, and I hope today’s podcast can help you.
